No, not really. DIRECTV stands at 95 HD’s and DISH Network is in the area of 70 currently. While the extra HD is nice for Time Warner subscribers in the Brooklyn, Queens,
DISH and DIRECTV have an inherent advantage in providing High-Definition channels. When an agreement is in place to carry a new HD network, the satellite television providers can beam the new channel to the whole country at once, as long as they have the capacity to do it. Cable companies have to upgrade each area in order to deliver additional content, such as new HD networks.
Time Warner’s press release also offers a few other amusing nuggets. The company starts the press release this way:

Free? I guess Time Warner is now the generous cable company of the Northeast, spreading free HD throughout

You guys are lucky to be getting HD content. In other parts of the world, they’re just starting to roll out HD.
Cable just can’t compete. They have to face the fact that TV isn’t their cup of tea and just focus on Internet.
I”m yet to see any significant HD offerings from any of the local cable or satellite provider. Also, call me debie downer, but when someone says free, I have a hard time believing them. I’ll start being impressed when more than just the random and sports channels are offered in HD.
