Time Warner Offers “Free” HD

Time Warner Cable continued its HD expansion yesterday, announcing a big rollout of high-definition in the New York area. After last weeks announcement expanding HD in the Dallas area, is Time Warner finally catching up with DIRECTV and DISH Network?

No, not really. DIRECTV stands at 95 HD’s and DISH Network is in the area of 70 currently. While the extra HD is nice for Time Warner subscribers in the Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island areas, it doesn’t do anything for Time Warner subscribers in other parts of the country who have to wait for their HD rollout.

DISH and DIRECTV have an inherent advantage in providing High-Definition channels. When an agreement is in place to carry a new HD network, the satellite television providers can beam the new channel to the whole country at once, as long as they have the capacity to do it. Cable companies have to upgrade each area in order to deliver additional content, such as new HD networks.

Time Warner’s press release also offers a few other amusing nuggets. The company starts the press release this way:

“Time Warner Cable of New York and New Jersey is poised to carry 100 High Definition (HD) channels.” Poised? That doesn’t sound like much of a promise. In fact, I’m sure all of the cable, satellite and Telco television players are “poised” to offer lots of high-definition. Actual delivery of said HD is a bit more of an issue.

Later on in the release, Howard Szarfarc, the EVP for the company’s New York City region says this about the company’s HD offering:

“Unlike with DIRECTV®, DISH® and some telecommunications companies which charge extra for these HD services, our customers can watch what they want, when they want, in HD…for free”

Free? I guess Time Warner is now the generous cable company of the Northeast, spreading free HD throughout New York City. Upon further examination, it seems Time Warner’s rates are fairly close to DIRECTV and DISH, even with their “extra charge” for HD. Here are links to compare Time Warner Cable versus DISH Network or DIRECTV.

You guys are lucky to be getting HD content. In other parts of the world, they’re just starting to roll out HD.

Cable just can’t compete. They have to face the fact that TV isn’t their cup of tea and just focus on Internet.

I”m yet to see any significant HD offerings from any of the local cable or satellite provider. Also, call me debie downer, but when someone says free, I have a hard time believing them. I’ll start being impressed when more than just the random and sports channels are offered in HD.
