Feeling the heat from primary competitor DirecTV, Dish Network announced today that they are freezing prices until 2009. In a press release, Jessica Insalaco, senior vice president and Chief Marketing Officer for Dish Network announced some of the details:
“DISH Network offers customers the best DVRs and programming available via our DishDVR Advantage packages starting at $39.99 per month — a price we’re freezing until February 2009.” The DishDVR Advantage package includes local channels, the America’s Top 100/200 channel lineup, plus free installation in of a two room DVR and costs either $39.99 or $49.99 per month depending on package selection. An upgrade to Americas Top 250 is an additional $10 per month.
Dish also went on to brag about their HD DVR, which has outperformed other DVR’s on the market according to Dish Network and CNET. New Dish Network customers can get their hands on the ViP722 HD DVR for free with qualifying package. According to Dish Network, the ViP722 gives customers access to 75 HD channels. It can record up to 55 hours of HD programming, as long as they subscribe to HD service, currently $20 a month with 6 months free.
While Dish Network made a big deal of the price freeze in todays press release, note they did not freeze all package pricing. Dish Family, at $19.99 a month is also mentioned as a package that will remain at the same price point until 2009.
Dish Network fell behind competitor DirecTV according to recent earnings reports, which showed subsciber growth flat for Dish. Combined with a strong push by Direct TV into the HD arena, Dish has been scrambling to regain momentum.
